How to check AI study notes against the source
A practical method for checking generalisations, numbers and missing conditions. Correct misleading notes using a complete lesson example.
Fluent notes should also be checkable
Judge the organisation of a study note separately from the accuracy of its claims. AI can misread a number, combine two speakers' statements or omit a condition. Checking is not about rewriting every sentence. It is about tracing the information you will study back to the source.
Start with three kinds of sentence: calculations, general rules and claims using strong words such as “always”, “only” or “definitely”. Compare these with the source before moving to smaller details. We will use the four-paragraph text in the mean and median example.
Check a note in five steps
- Separate the claims. “The mean is 30 and everyone travels for 30 minutes” contains two claims. Check the first through calculation and the second against the observations.
- Record the location. Use S2, page 8 or 12:40 rather than “near the start”. A PDF's page position may differ from the printed page number.
- Recalculate and check units. The five values total 150; the divisor is 5; the answer is 30 minutes. Calling it hours would make the note wrong even though the number was right.
- Preserve the conditions. Values must be ordered before finding a median. “Choose the third number” applies to this five-value example, not to every dataset.
- Separate unsupported statements. Mark a claim you cannot locate as “to check”. Do not use it as a fact or a quiz answer merely because it sounds plausible.
From a misleading note to a usable one
| Problematic statement | Check and correction |
|---|---|
| “All students travel for 30 minutes.” | S2 gives a mean of 30; the observations differ. Write: “The mean of these five observations is 30 minutes.” |
| “The median is the third number.” | S3 requires ordering and checking the count first. Write: “In this ordered group of five, the third, middle value is the median.” |
| “70 minutes is wrong and should be deleted.” | S4 does not establish a measurement error. You can say the value is large; deleting it needs a separate justification. |
The aim is not to make the summary longer. Each correction restores something that prevents an incorrect inference: the relevant group, a condition or the required evidence.
Make your own source easier to check
Video or audio: Replay the passage around an uncertain term. Check dates, names and negations carefully. If a speaker corrects an earlier statement, do not preserve only the first version.
PDF or scan: Check whether text is selectable. OCR can mix a table's rows and columns, leaving plausible numbers paired with the wrong labels. Compare formulas and units with the actual page image.
Long or multiple sources: Make a short coverage list using section headings. A completed upload percentage does not by itself establish that analysis or all outputs are ready. After processing, check that the expected sections appear. If one is missing, include the source and section name when contacting support.
A check record you can copy
Claim: Source and location: Number / concept I checked: Condition to preserve: Corrected statement: Status: checked / revisit
After checking the note, write a definition question and an application question. A faulty question can lead you to practise the wrong answer, so verify the answer key separately. The error log in the review guide helps you return to uncertain points in a later session.
This process checks consistency with a source; it does not guarantee that the source itself is accurate. For current, medical or legal claims, consult suitable current and authoritative references.
